AFFILIATIONS:
Independant, UFP membership applied for.
WARP CAPABLE:  Yes
HOME PLANET:  Gideon IV  (Gideon System)
POPULATION:  865,000,000
FIRST CONTACT:  2374
HISTORICAL OVERVIEW:
Starfleet's first encounter with the Yetanni was made by the USS Liberty (Galaxy Class) on a deep space exploration assignment in the region. The Liberty entered the Gideon system and encountered a flourishing culture with basic warp travel, used to move between in system colonies. The Liberty discovered the Yetanni in crisis. An asteroid had been detected on a collision course with Gideon IV.

The Liberty, commanded by Captain Earick, attempted to change the course of the asteroid by various means. After several attempts and several critical system failures with the deflector dish and tractor system, Captain Earick used the stardrive section of the Liberty to crash into the Asteroid and deflect it into a new course.

The Saucer section crash-landed on Gideon 4. The brave actions of the Liberty crew cemented a friendship between the Federation and the Yetanni. Liberty's saucer section and the surrounding plateau, later renamed "Liberty Plateau" became the Federation's base of operations in the Ryalli Sector.

The Yetanni have since applied for Federation membership. No final decision on their acceptance has been reached

RACIAL DESCRIPTION:
The Yetanni are a mammalian species resembling part Earth bear and part Earth tiger. Their heads are large and they have snouts similar to that of a bear's. Their ears are long and dexterous, able to swivel in different directions to a limited degree.

They have heavy fur coats of varying colors that grow thicker in the winter.

Their most distinctive feature is their 3 sets of limbs. Two sets of limbs, the bottom-most and top-most are known as "True Feet" and "False Hands."  Both are used for movement. Yettani can move equally well on 4 limbs as well as two. The middle set of limbs are known as "True Hands" and contain finger-like appendages that allow them to manipulate their environment. When standing, the movement of False Hands are an intregal part of expressing emotion in Yetanni speech
.

CULTURAL CHARACTERISTICS:
The Yetanni social structure is made up of clans. Unlike some worlds where clans can number in the hundreds, Yetanni clans can number a million or more. Clans are led by Clan-heads, which are generally the wisest of the clans, elected to their position by Family-heads, which in turn are elected by family. Clan and family are important aspect of Yetanni culture.

Both sexes in Yetanni culture have roles. Men tend to be the workers and the women the child-rearers. Yetanni culture is open to new ideas however, so this is by no means a rule for all Yetanni. Yetanni women have the same rights as males.

Yetanni are a deeply religious race. While they do not worship god/deities as such, they subscribe to deep cultural philosophies, such as Honor, Love, Wisdom, Respect and Courage. Individuals who show prowess in these philosophies are considered honored and enlightened. The sacrifice of the Liberty in 2374 was seen as a true example of all five of these virtues, and in part why the Federation and more precisely, the crew of Liberty, are so deeply respected by the Yetanni.

With these Virtues comes the importance of Names. Federation anthropologists have been amazed at the vast variety that a single Yetanni may have. A name signifies something of import and can change, or be added to often. It is rarely the Yetanni individual who changes or adds a name to himself, but those around him or her. Names can have many purposes and in and of themselves have their own names.

Yetanni have excellent memories for names and have little trouble remembering significant ones.

There is the Base Name, a name the Yetanni is known as universally. Ex. Bwowbavabitishnada.

There is the Friend Name, ex. "Friend Trent" a nickname of sorts, shared by one or more close friends. A Yetanni may have many Friend Names, an aspect that can be sometimes confusing to outsiders. If a Yetanni is referring to another Yetanni in conversation, he will never use a Friend name to refer to that Yetanni.  He will use the Base Name.

There are Virtue Names, given when a Yetanni achieves a virtue in a conspicuous or sometimes non-conspicuous way. With this often comes Event Names, names given to a person, place or thing that signifies a significant event. An Event Name may change several times over a lifetime.

Most Yetanni tend to use Base Names with outsiders as they recognize the confusion that could result otherwise.

SPECIAL NOTE:  It has recently been revealed that the Yetanni have a deep reverance of the nebula known as the "Ryalli Expanse." Yetanni legend suggests that the Yetanni have visited the expanse some time in their past. So far, however, no archeological evidence has been found to support this.

GOVERNMENT:
There are three separate political entities on Gideon IV. Though they are technically countries, they operate under a federal form of government similar to the UPF. Each nation-state has a clanhouse made up of clanleaders in that nation-state. Those clanleaders elect representatives to the planetary clanhouse from among their number. The head of state is elected from the planetary clanhouse by his peers. The official, known as Clanleader, serves as long as he has the confidence of the nation-state clanhouses.

There is no standing Yetanni Army. The closest they have to a military force are local police and provincial militias
.

TECHNOLOGY:
The Yetanni have displayed a technological level similar to late 22nd century Earth. They have achieved warp travel of up to warp 5 and have extensive space infrastructure used for manufacturing, mining and recreation.

A few notable exceptions to Yetanni technology should be noted.

They do not have transporter technology. The concept was entirely new to them as of the arrival of the Federation. Other related technologies such as replicators are also unknown to their tech base. The Yetanni do excel in sensor technology and computer design. It is estimated that Yetanni sensor tech is at least as good as the Federation's, and their computers are about 30 years behind
