Under her first captain, Captain Richard Earick, the USS Liberty embarked on a long range exploratory mission to the Ryalli Sector, making first contact with over 12 previously unknown sentient races. The last of these, the Yetanni, were in crisis when the Liberty visited their system. An asteroid from their sizable asteroid field had moved into a collision course with their home planet. The collision of the asteroid, which measured over 30 kilometers across, would have caused catastrophic destruction to the surface of the planet. Although the Yetanni were a warp capable species with an impressive space infrastructure, they were not equipped to deal with the situation. As a result, they requested assistance from the USS Liberty. With some trial and error, the Liberty’s crew succeeded in deflecting the asteroid from its collision course to a minor degree, but not without receiving critical systems damage that put a halt to the rescue attempts. The asteroid’s course had not been shifted enough to save the planet and time was running out. In a last ditch effort, Captain Earick ordered the Liberty to initiate hull separation, then set the battle drive into a collision course with the asteroid in hopes of using the force of the initiated warp drive to nudge the asteroid into a new course.. The attempt was successful, but the resulting explosion further damaged the saucer, sending it into a dive into the atmosphere of the planet. Due to skillful piloting by Captain Earick and his First Officer, Commander Kelso, the Liberty landed safely, though not without damage. Captain Earick was killed in the landing. Under the command of Commander Kelso, the Liberty and her crew spent the next three years repairing the Liberty Saucer and cementing a firm relationship with the Yetanni. The Yetanni, an honorable race, in gratitude for the sacrifices the USS Liberty and her crew had made, granted the Federation, ownership of the Liberty Plateau, a large 100 mile square territory upon which the Liberty landed. Liberty Station then essentially became a small Federation run state on the planet. The close relationship with the Yetanni, founded by the sacrifice of Captain Earick and work of Captain Kelso, continues today with the USS Liberty now known as Liberty Station and the base of operations for Federation forces in the Ryalli Sector. PURPOSE: Liberty Station serves several purposes in the Ryalli Sector. Since the opening of the Valadis corridor, which allows faster traffic from the Federation to the region, Liberty station has become the Federation’s base of operations in the region. It has evolved into far more than a crashed starship. Among its official functions are: serving as base of operations for Starfleet forces in the sector, Embassy to the Yetanni people, Diplomatic headquarters for all diplomatic services in the Sector, trade hub for Federation related commerce, and home to a growing multicultural collection of peoples. Its chief purpose, however, is as base of operations for Starfleet exploratory efforts in the Ryalli sector. While Liberty is a ground-based station, it is able to provide the logistical and personnel resources to supply starships and perform moderate repairs to most Federation ships in the region. Repair services are available from Starfleet personal at a nominal fee, though most Non-Starfleet repairs are directed to the Yetanni maintained GORA facility. Requests for services and more information about Starfleet’s mission in this region should be directed to the Station Commander’s office. AMENITIES AND SERVICES: Like all starbases, Liberty Station and it's affiliated plateau boasts a host of services for its guests. Liberty has the additional advantage of being located on the beautiful forest world of Gideon, and has the space for recreational facilities not available on space oriented stations or ports of call. LANDING SKID: The Landing Skid was created when the belly of the Liberty saucer section scraped the topsoil away from the bedrock on Liberty Plateau during its landing. The resulting flat area is over 5 kilometers long and 470 meters wide. It has proven to be perfect landing pad for various landing capable starships, Defiant Class and smaller. There are currently 6 pads marked on the landing skid for use by visitors. Visitors interested in using Liberty Stations Landing facilities should contact Liberty Air Control. LIBERTY STATION: As a well established Federation presence in the region, Liberty Station has presented itself as a perfect base of operations for all Federation activities in the region. With the additional support of the Yetanni space infrastructure, Liberty Station is able to provide most of the services of a moderately sized Starbase. Liberty Station contains all the amenities of a Galaxy Class starship, including holodecks, shuttle bay, theater, gymnasium, a host of shops, accommodations, replicator services, medical services and computer services. Liberty Station also provides limited starship repair and servicing when needed. As this is now the ground-level deck of Liberty Station -- following her crash landing on Gideon IV a few years back -- there is direct ground floor access to Liberty Plateau and the well-traveled thoroughfare (aka, street) to Liberty Village. This is by far Liberty Station's most popular tourist attraction. Small Animal Zoo (deck 13): A small zoo catering to the inhabitants of Liberty Plateau and the surrounding areas. Features many small animals, as well as a few of the only non-domestic Earth animals in the sector, and a number of interesting Tempus IV species. The museum is open to the public daily. Those interested in learning more about Liberty Station’s facilities should contact the Civilian Supervisor's Office for more information. Vistor's brochures are available. LIBERTY VILLAGE: Shortly after the Liberty saucer landed, a new town sprang up near the crash site. Originally built by the Yetanni, it was quickly dubbed Liberty Village by those who lived in it, in honor of the station itself. Since that time, the village has been rebuilt using standard Federation building materials. Many Starfleet personnel now live within the village. Notable Liberty Village attractions are as follows: Liberty Village Hostel An inexpensive and friendly place available to visitors who wish to stay here. Liberty Cultural Center and Museum Located near the Hostel, this is the perfect place to find out about Yetanni culture and history, as well as the Liberty’s role it all. Admittance is free. Hank Aaron Memorial Ballpark -- (Home of the Liberty Giants, and the Village Beavers) Ironically, within Starfleet, baseball has seen a major resurgence of interest in the past ten years. Even to the point of being played professionally again. As a result, some of the crew from the USS Liberty who had an interest in the game, brought it with them to Gideon IV. Later, in conjunction with the redevelopment of Liberty Village, a motion was passed to allow the construction of a small baseball facility (capacity: 350 people) just off the Liberty Thoroughfare. Today, both Liberty Station and Liberty Village maintain teams and regularly play each other in the Gideon summer months. Occassionally, sector vessels will also field a team and challenge one or both of the two teams. At present, Tempus IV has also chosen to train and field at least four teams in the sport of baseball, in the hopes of starting a league within the sector.... Softball tournaments are also played here regularly during the summer months, and in the winter months, the annual Liberty Carnival is also hosted here. Tchirrikith Cafe One of the most popular Yetanni owned cafe's in Liberty Village. Rumored to even be the favorite restaurant establishment of Captain John Kelso of Liberty Station. A quaint little cafe, as far as Yetanni establishments go, this one serves a vast array of Yetanni and human food. Reasonably priced. Highly recommended. Liberty Village Smokehouse An excellent old-fashioned meat supplier with an assortment of varied meats from the known sector. Village Dairy Suppliers An old-fashioned dairy. The supplier of dairy products on Liberty Plateau. Provides a variety of cheeses, eggs, etc., and goes to great lengths to supply Tempi milk to the human population on the plateau (Tempi milk is a near identical dairy product to that found on Earth). The selection of cheeses however is perhaps the biggest draw. Liberty Village Brewery A small independantly-owned brewery that caters to the inhabitants of Liberty Plateau. Yetanni cannot stomach Human beers, however there is a small segment of younger Yetanni who have taken an interest in it. The supplier of beers on Gideon, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, as well as root beer, and other similar beverages. ...other attractions.... In addition to the above attractions, Liberty Village provides most of the amenities of a small town, including medical services, food and shopping. Several small Café’s provide both human and Yetanni food, and local cultural goods can be purchased at a local bazaar at the north end of the village. Other services including more technical ones are available through any of the larger stores. A note of warning: Yetanni merchants are notoriously oriented on social interaction and conversation. Visitors are advised to treat merchants with the utmost friendliness, patience and attention to conversation in order to get the best bargains. GOLF: Liberty Station boasts the finest (and only) par 5, 18 hole golf course this side of the Valadis Corridor. Built a year after the landing of Liberty, Earick Golf Course, was created completely on the sly by Annette Hobbs Liberty’s Civilian Supervisor (and resident golf fanatic) under the stated goal of creating pasture lands for Yetanni sheep. Though the Yetanni are physically unable to play the game, they found her secret goal fascinating and signed on to the endeavor. With their help it was completed without anyone realizing what she had done until it was finished. The golf course does fulfil its intended goal, as Yetanni sheep provide their service as lawn mowers. In addition, it is a favorite spot for hikers and picnickers from Liberty Station, as well as the best and only golf course in a hundred light years. Earick Golf Course boasts 18 holes complete with sand and water traps. The golf ball eating sponge bark of nearby trees provides an additional hazard. It was designed with the highest attention to detail by holodeck simulations of several of the finest course designers in the past 300 years, including Arnold Palmer and T’Pring. The course uses native flora for the turf and has a running stream and several lakes. A small clubhouse is available for lending clubs and providing refreshments and meals. Golfers are advised to warn Yetanni sheepherders to clear the fairway when playing through. FORESTS: Liberty Plateau has some of the finest Spongewood forests on the continent. Growing to over 200 meters tall in some places, Spongewood trees are awesome in their majesty, and worth the look for any intrepid sightseer. Hikers are advised to become aware of some of the planet’s larger predators before embarking on hikes. Hiring a Yetanni guide for longer hikes is strongly advised. ~~~ Please enjoy your stay at Liberty Station.
