BACKGROUND
2359: Born to parents Marro and Tezana Tabor on Betazed.
2369: Ryjo creates the music program Pocketone, which is later purchased by NeoDynamics.
2373: The Dominion occupies Betazed. Ryko is the only family member to survive execution.

CHILDHOOD:
Ryko Tabor was born in 2359, the fourth of four children to Marro and Tezana Tabor. His parents and siblings followed the family tradition of becoming agricultural engineers, but it became evident quite early on that this was not to be his life’s calling.

His mother claimed that he began singing before he could talk, entertaining them with trills and melodies, as well as imitating the tones, rhythms, and pitches of whatever music the family happened to be listening to at the time. As he grew it seemed he lived and breathed music of all varieties. Although his family supported his efforts, it was frequently a source of agitation, particularly when his thirst for knowledge and expanding his musical repertoire overlapped with the sleep patterns of an agrarian society.

Although he was a self-described “brown thumb,” he was required to help out in the family engineering business, as well as on their own farm. Ryko loathed these times and dreaded any and all chores around the farm until his frustrated father finally put him in charge of caring for the livestock. The resulting upswing of productivity surprised his family enough that they quietly observed his chores to find him singing to the contented animals. His father began referring to him as the Tamer, but Ryko shrugged it off simply by describing the animals as his first appreciative audience.

His paternal grandparents were perhaps his staunchest supporters. His grandfather, Myza, was Betazoid, while his grandmother, T’Sal, was Vulcan. Although T’Sal taught him a great deal about Vulcan instruments, styles, and the use of logical and mathematical progressions in his music, Ryko has always felt that his music was much more an expression of his emotional state than simply notes on a page. Myza understood this and quietly arranged for a Betazoid master musician, Miraal Lasaan, to attend a school concert. Lasaan was impressed by Ryko’s natural abilities and decided to see how well he learned in an accelerated apprenticeship.

EDUCATION / BETAZED OCCUPATION:
One of Lasaan’s first tests for Ryko involved an intense study of the Human opera genre, much more in-depth than any research he had ever conducted. Ryko found this to be quite difficult, having little understanding of the native languages. He became frustrated at what he considered to be inadequate, patchwork translations into Standard and other languages with which he was more familiar. As a result, at the age of nine he began the process of teaching himself Italian. Shortly after his tenth birthday, he completed translations of Gounoud’s “Faust,” Verdi’s “Jerusalem,” and Rossini’s “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” that are considered to be a standard to this day. Not yet satisfied with his work, he created a simplistic computer program which could automatically cross-translate musical scores from various cultural formats. He named the program Pocketone, since it was originally kept running on a padd in his pocket for ready access to its six compositional format cross-translational matrix. NeoDynamics, a computer firm based on Earth, bought the rights to streamline and further develop the program. Currently Pocketone is capable of cross-translating musical scores into more than 4,000 separate formats, with additional updates every three months. Although the program has changed radically since its inception and the involvement of NeoDynamics, the core matrix remains remarkably similar to his original work and he retains author’s rights to it.

During the next several years, Ryko’s skills as a singer and instrumentalist improved considerably. Lasaan frequently quipped that Ryko could teach himself to play any unfamiliar instrument he encountered – just perhaps not quite in the manner in which the designer had intended. His name was already well known in musical circles and his career seemed posed to take flight.

At the age of fourteen, however, his life changed dramatically when the Dominion invaded the Alpha Quadrant and captured Betazed. At first the occupation had little effect on his family’s region of the planet. Within a month, however, following several brilliant raids by a resistance movement in the area, Jem’Hadar soldiers began rounding up civilians they deemed capable of presenting a threat to the imposed regime. Ostensibly a campaign for information on the resistance, those taken into the custody of the Jem’Hadar were rarely seen again; those who did survive were perceived as guilty of providing information to the enemy.

Although Ryko’s siblings went to join the resistance movement, Ryko remained behind with his parents, having no skills which the resistance would find useful. During one such Jem’Hadar raid, Ryko, his parents, and grandparents, were taken into custody. Ryko was separated from his family and entered into the standardized interrogation routine, alternately questioned by Jem’Hadar and Vorta for a period of days. He was eventually released into an internment camp, where he managed to locate his grandfather.

After several days of searching to no avail for information on the rest of the family, the prisoners were taken to a nearby field to prepare it for cultivation of crops for supplies. Upon reaching the field and seeing heavy digging equipment, as well as several patches of recently upturned Earth, Myza realized the awful truth. As the Jem’Hadar began firing their rifles into the crowd of civilians, Myza stepped in front of Ryko and wrapped his arms around him as a human shield. The fatal blast struck Myza in the back with sufficient force to travel through his body and strike Ryko in the chest as well. The pain in his own body, as well as having his fragile, newly developed mental abilities overwhelmed by the deaths of his grandfather and those around him, caused him to collapse unconscious beneath Myza’s body. During their search and examination of the bodies, the soldiers shot, kicked, or stabbed at those they suspected may have survived the executions. Ryko awoke several hours later to darkness. A Betazoid voice calmed his fears as they treated his pulse rifle burn, along with a stab wound and a severe head injury from the search of the bodies. He was carried away and treated further. When his vision began to return nearly two weeks later, Ryko saw his savior for the first time – a grizzled old man named Merta, who served as a medic for the resistance movement.

During his recovery he watched the man valiantly strive to save the lives of those injured in the fighting – resistance and civilians alike. Believing his entire family to be dead and seeing no place for his music in the society the Dominion had imposed upon them, Ryko began working with Merta to treat the wounded.

He applied the same enthusiasm for learning to his new occupation that he had given his music and, within three months, Merta deemed him to be “a passable medic.” As he began nearly subconsciously learning Dominionese, the leaders of his resistance cell realized he had an aptitude for languages and saw a potential advantage. They began allowing him to participate in operations in a medical and linguistic capacity. Although his understanding of and personal practical experience with weapons is minimal, by the end of the Dominion War, he had been involved in more ground combat than many Starfleet officers see in their entire careers.

Following the war, Ryko was reunited with his father to learn that his mother and two of his three siblings had also died during the occupation. His Vulcan grandmother is still officially listed as missing, although evidence exists suggesting that she survived captivity.

Upon completion of a graduate equivalency program, Ryko chose to leave Betazed and enter Starfleet. Starfleet initially attempted to recruit him for communications, due to his highly sensitive auditory and vocal abilities, but Ryko opted to further his training as a medical technician.

His year in training as a medical technician was largely undistinguished, with little effort being placed beyond achieving minimum proficiency requirements. His instructors found him to be a competent young medic, simply lacking the enthusiasm to fully apply himself.

Since his acceptance into Starfleet, he has undergone extensive counseling for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder related to the Dominion occupation. He continues to suffer from nightmares and occasional flashbacks, but their frequencies have gradually lessened. He retains deep seeded fears of phasers and Jem’Hadar, but has made extensive progress since the beginning of treatment. For this reason it is advised that the counseling staff at his future postings continue to closely monitor his case

STARFLEET SERVICE:
In late May, 2378, he was assigned to the defiant class USS Terra Nova. In July he is injured while attempting to save the life of his superior, Lt. Cmdr. Garrett Andrews. While successful in saving the First Officer from the clutches of space, Garrett Andrews still died from his injuries.

PERSONALITY PROFILE
Starfleet counselors frequently describe Ryko as dual natured. On one hand he tends to be shy, quiet, and unassuming. On the other hand when it comes to demonstrating his competency as a medic or his skill as a musician, a much richer enthusiasm seems to shine through.

PHYSICAL PROFILE
Ryko stands 5’10” tall and is thinly built, with brown hair and eyes. He has a small scar in the center of his chest that he has thus far declined to discuss or have cosmetically removed.

SPECIAL NOTES
Although most Betazoids exhibit auditory sensitivity slightly above Terran standards, Ryko’s hearing has proven to be remarkably heightened over the years, with functional upper and lower ranges well beyond typical humanoid standards. It is believed that this increased ability to discriminate sounds, combined with an increased vocal flexibility, contributes greatly to his musical and linguistic skills.

Never having had the opportunity during adolescence to take part in the traditional mental training of Betazoids, his telepathic and empathic abilities remain relatively unfocused. However, his sessions with Starfleet counselors have begun to afford him the opportunity to correct this deficit.

Despite being a sound medical technician, his psychological background suggests that it is in his best interests to remain at a more secured facility until such a time as he is better able to come to terms with the events in his past. Ryko disagrees with this assessment. However, unintentional flashbacks have occurred during training simulations, temporarily rendering him ineffective in the field. Because of this unpredictable response, caution is advised when placing him in potentially hostile situations unless immediate supervision is available.
