CHILDHOOD:
Mulenga Banda was born in 2341 to Elsbeth and Frank Banda, in Luangua wildlife Preserve, South Central Africa on Earth. His parents were semi-traditionalists, living in a village inside the park mimicking a lifestyle that would have been common in the region in the 19th century. His childhood was filled with learning traditional hunting methods, tracking, and how to live off the land.

The village was and is a tourist attraction for those wishing to visit the Luangua Wildlife Preserve. While, Mulenga lived in primitive conditions for much of his childhood, he occasionally received glimpses of the outside world. Tourists from all over the Federation and outside it visited the park.  Occasionally, they would also visit the village. More often than not, these visitors were not human. The alien visits left him with a keen sense of curiosity about the world outside the park.

EDUCATION:
In 2347, Mulenga began primary school within the park. As per Federation law, the school curriculum was standard, with advanced courses. Excelling both in the maths and sciences, Mulenga graduated from Primary school in 2355. With the blessing of his parents, he attended Chelston Secondary School in distant Ndola. Mulenga was a good student, spending part of his time, studying, and part working in the school's small manufacturing plant.

While most of the students at Chelston Secondary School were human, one of his teachers was Vulcan. Mulenga's curiosity drew him to the Vulcan, leading him to a friendship with the logical woman and to study both Vulcan culture and language. He also began to read extensively about the known galaxy.

He graduated in 2359 in the middle of his class. Despite his class rank, his marks in maths and science were so outstanding that they earned him an offer to attend the prestigious Mandela Southern African Institute of Technology. Mulenga accepted the offer, and attended MSAIT for two years. He primarily studied engineering and mechanics at MSAIT and received excellent marks in his classes until a prank (involving a software hack in a transporter that selectively targeted clothing,
disposed of it, then transported the people naked to their destination) saw him expelled from MSAIT.

While MSAIT agreed to reaccept Mulenga the following year, he chose instead to apply to Starfleet Academy. Despite the black mark on his academic record, Mulenga was accepted into the Academy, where he spent the next four years studying to become a starfleet officer. As well as targeted technical courses, Mulenga took advanced courses in starship engineering and warp field propulsion. At the academy, Mulenga eagerly fostered friendships with non-humans, including Vulcans and Andorians.
Their alien nature made them semi-outsiders on earth, a feeling Mulenga felt intensely, surrounded by city and starship hulls instead of savanna grassland.

Even after their graduation, Mulenga continues to remain in contact with most of them.  Many of his academy friends died during Wolf 359, and later in the Dominion War.

Mulenga graduated in 2364 in the middle of his class and went on, with Starfleet's permission, to the Warp Field Propulsion Institute to pursue graduate studies in Warp Field Propulsion and starship design. After two years studies and a thesis, Mulenga earned a Masters degree.

STARFLEET SERVICE:
In 2367, Mulenga was assigned to the USS Monitor, a New Orleans Class ship assigned to diplomatic missions to various non-Federation nations. His five year service on the Monitor was mostly uneventful.  He proved himself to be an eager and hard worker. While not exactly innovative, Mulenga proved himself invaluable because of his deductive reasoning and innovation abilities.  In one instance, he correctly deduced why the Warp Core had failed, and saved the ship several days of valuable repair time that were needed for a sensitive diplomatic mission.  His diligence earned him a promotion to Lt.(Jg) by the Monitor's captain.

In 2372, Mulenga was promoted to Lieutenant and transferred to the Galaxy Class Starship, USS Santee. He served aboard the Santee until 2374 when the dominion war broke out. The need for experienced engineers saw him transferred to the Defiant class starship, USS Lomax as Assistant
Engineer. As the Dominion War took its toll, Mulenga's ship saw several skirmishes with Jem Hadar fighters and several major battles with the Dominion. At the battle at Betezed, the Lomax's chief engineer was killed in action. Mulenga assumed the position and duties, with diligence and attention to detail.

Early in the Battle for Cardassia in 2375 (the final battle of the Dominion War), the USS Lomax was extensively damaged and sent adrift into deep space, forced to watch the battle from a distance.  Despite 70% casualties and the death of the entire command crew, Mulenga took command and drove his engineering team to keep the ship together as system after system failed. Despite horrific conditions and an attack run by a lone Jem Hadar fighter, the engineering department and the ship's crew managed to hold the ship together.

Before help could arrive to save the crew, however, the warp Core began to breach. Mulenga single-handedly saved the ship by entering the sealed engineering section and manually ejecting the core. His quick action saved what remained of the crew. Mulenga's action earned him the Starfleet Citation for Conspicuous Gallantry and the Medal of Honor.

His gallantry was not without cost however, as he suffered plasma burns on 45% of his body, and lost his left arm, his right hand and his left leg below the knee.  Only heroic efforts by his engineering team to get him out of the engineering compartment and the frantic work of the hastily repaired EMH system saved his life.

Mulenga spent the next half year on medical leave receiving extensive restorative surgery and psychological treatment for post-traumatic stress. His arm, hand and leg were replaced with prosthetic limbs. At the end of his recuperation period and with the tentative agreement of Starfleet Medical, he accepted a promotion to Lieutenant Commander and an assignment at Utopia Planitia Shipyards to help with refits of Defiant Class Starships, including the USS Terra Nova. He has privately expressed reservations at assigning exploratory missions to the primarily combat oriented starship.

In 2377, at the offer of Captain Billings and with a clean bill of health from Star Fleet Medical, Mulenga accepted a position as Chief Engineer aboard the Terra Nova.

In April 2378, following a dibilitating injury to Captain Billings, Mulenga was promoted to full Commander, transferred to the command department, and given the acting captainship of the USS Terra Nova. In September 2378 he was reassigned to New Urbaine in the Ryalli Sector as Head of Starfleet Operations to oversee the attempt to modernize and fortify the small colony.

PERSONALITY PROFILE
Mulenga is a traditionalist, espousing both traditional values and living. Since the end of the Dominion War and his injuries, Mulenga has become somewhat of a loner, less social and outgoing. Those friends who were killed in the Dominion War were very close, which has made it hard for him to adjust and create new close relationships.

Despite his apprehension for getting close, Mulenga is always extremely friendly and polite, and shows a great interest in the personal welfare of his subordinates and fellow officers. This aspect of his personality is as much cultural as it is his duty.

He is detailed, hard working, with a positive attitude about his work. He gets the most satisfaction from improving his skills, his ship, and the abilities of those who work under him.  He likes innovation, and is attracted to new concepts and ideas, not only in engineering, but in life.

Mulenga has an innate fascination with Vulcans and alien races in general. The concept of non-human beings is the ultimate fulfillment of his quest for new concepts and ideas.

SPECIAL NOTES
Mulenga has suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome and survivor guilt in the past, but has been given a clean bill of health from Starfleet medical.

His prosthetics make him clumsy at times, as the replacement limbs simply aren't as good as his original parts. Starfleet Medical says said disabilities will go away.
