BACKGROUND
December 16, 2346: Born in Tokyo, Japan.
2368: Graduated from Starfleet Academy.

CHILDHOOD:
Namiko was born on December 16th 2346 and, like most Japanese adolescence, spent her childhood being encouraged relentlessly by her parents to study hard and sacrifice all of her time outside of school in the pursuit of bettering herself. For the most part she succeeded in doing so and while not a university graduate like her two older sisters, she has nonetheless retained the respect and approval of her parents.

EDUCATION:
After graduating from Hokkaido Tokai Highschool, she decided to enter Starfleet Academy and study the incredibly diverse subject of Federation law. At the academy, Namiko majored in Judge Advocate General and minored in Flight-Control. Studying a wide variety of topics, she particularly enjoyed the syllabi that covered Starfleet protocol, diplomacy, and Federation law and history.

STARFLEET SERVICE:
Shortly after graduation in 2368, she was given a position onboard the USS Gorkon as a representative of the Judge Advocate General’s Corps. Initially she was disappointed that her first posting was an Excelsior class starship, since she had hoped to be stationed onboard a Galaxy class, but after time the disappointment subsided and she dedicated herself without prejudice.

Like many first-year JAG officers, Namiko spent her time doing mostly administrative work and occasionally acted as an advisor to the ship’s commanding officer, vice-admiral Alynna Nechayev. Known for her no-nonsense, down-to-business attitude, Nechayev had gained a reputation throughout Starfleet as being one of the most cold but brilliant tacticians in the admiralty. Like many Vulcan and Japanese officers, Namiko found the admiral’s work-ethics inspiring and after only several months onboard she began to hold the admiral in the highest of regards.

After working with Namiko for a year, Nechayev had come to recognize the ensigns professionalism and dedication, something that she felt her current aide lacked. So, dismissing her current aide and filing the appropriate transfer-papers with the Judge Advocate General’s office, she offered the position to Namiko. Finding a great amount of honour in the prospect of working for an officer like admiral Nechayev, Namiko accepted and was taken off the Judge Advocate General’s roster for active rotational duty. Fortunately for her, she quickly settled into the role of admiral’s aide and made very few of the mistakes that her predecessor did.

Within a year of becoming the admiral’s assistant she was already accompanying her to diplomatic negotiations, where she advised the admiral in matters of protocol and legality. She even went to the effort of becoming fluent in the Cardassian language during admiral Nechayev’s negotiations with the Cardassian government that fine-lined Federation-Cardassian borders and resulted in the creation of the Demilitarised-Zone.

After negotiations ended and Marquis attacks were causing diplomatic problems for Starfleet, Nechayev would regularly send Namiko to Cardassia Prime to officially apologise and try to appease angry Cardassian politicians. In 2372 she was promoted to Lieutenant JG, shortly after which the admiral was given command of the USS Crazy Horse and Namiko accompanied her there. Another four years as the admiral’s assistant and she was promoted to full Lieutenant in august of 2376.

When admiral Nechayev set up office in Starfleet Command, Namiko accompanied her to Earth where she had regular opportunities to return to Japan during shore-leave and visit her family. By April of 2377, it had became clear to Starfleet Command that Liberty Station was playing a significant role in the establishment of diplomatic relations with the inhabitants of the Ryalli Sector, and would hence benefit from having an increased diplomatic staff.

Nechayev, disappointed that she would be loosing an excellent assistant, nonetheless ordered Namiko to study everything Starfleet had documented on the Ryalli Sector before being transported there.

A year later, in late May, 2378, Namiko was transferred to the Defiant Class USS Terra Nova,  operating within the Ryalli Sector. She assumed the position of Chief Helm Officer/ Diplomatic Officer. Shortly after her assignment, however, she was reassigned to Liberty Station -- permanently -- at the request of Ambassador Trent Davis to serve as his Chief Aide.

PERSONALITY PROFILE
Namiko has been described as the stereotypical Japanese business-woman, and rightly so. She’s a perfectionist by all accounts and is greatly disturbed by any failure or inefficiency on her behalf. However, to say that she is a perfectionist is not to say that she doesn’t make mistakes, rather she avoids them whenever possible through constant alertness and almost obsessive meticulousness. Unfortunately, this often makes her seem fussy, and many of her colleges find her difficult or annoying to be around.

While she has quite a wicked sense of humour, Namiko would never allow this to show while on-duty which is why many think of her as having multiple personalities. While on-duty she is entirely professional. Don’t expect her to laugh at a joke or hold a non work-related conversation with you just because you’re her friend. To her, everyone is just a work associate while on-duty and it has the unfortunate effect of making her appear cold. While off-duty, however, she allows her wicked sense of humour to show and is quite adventurous. Some have even been so bold as to call her off-duty behaviour as promiscuous.

Like most Japanese, she does not like confrontation. She bows to those whom she meets and the angle at which she bows is determined by their importance. She prefers to stand rather than sit and rarely uses hand gestures (since the Japanese find big or sudden arm movements threatening). When speaking, she keeps her voice calm and even. She is not uncomfortable with silence so don’t be surprised if there are long gaps of silence if you’re sitting with her in the mess hall.

PHYSICAL PROFILE
Physically, Namiko is your stereotypical Japanese woman. At only 5’3 and 118 pounds, she doesn’t exactly have what many call a ‘demanding physical presence’. While reasonably attractive, she could easily be missed in a room full of people and she honestly prefers it that way. With black hair and eyes that lack any remarkable color or brightness, her only noteworthy feature is a tattoo located just above her right breast. The tattoo consists of two Japanese characters, both taking up about 3cm square in area, and mean ‘loyalty and dedication’.

SPECIAL NOTES
While visiting the Argrathi homeworld in mid 2376 on official Starfleet business, Namiko was accused of industrial espionage and convicted without trial. Before Starfleet could object, the Argrathi authorities had already carried out their punishment on her and released her into Starfleet custody. This punishment involved implanting compressed memories into her brain; memories of a life-sentence served in brutal incarceration. These cannot be removed with current Federation technology and, as a result, Namiko effectively experienced all those years in her mind.

While she has already come to terms with the fact that these memories never actually happened, she nonetheless remembers experiencing seventy years in prison. At first, she found returning to duty extremely difficult and had to be sedated twice after an attempted suicide. Now, however, she appears to have gotten over it and even talks about her ‘experiences’ with a sense of humour. However, Starfleet Medical still recommends that she undergo regular counselling.
