BACKGROUND
2349: Born to parents Aker and Friena Varel in Madrid, Spain on Earth.
2372: Hadt's father is killed in a Dominion bombing at an interstellar conference in Antwerp, Earth.
2373: Graduates from Starfleet Academy.
2378: Listed as Missing in Action during a mission in the Ryalli Sector.

CHILDHOOD:
Hadt Varel was born to Aker and Friena Varel in 2349. The son of a powerful lawyer and a politically-prominent scientist, he lived a life of relative luxury; a member of the upper eschelon.

Growing up he had everything he wanted, except his parent's attention. Aker became an arbiter for the Federation, dealing with interstellar law, and Friena began to work with other scientists on Earth on a then little-known program called the Atlantis Project. Neither of them held residence at the family home on Trill; they were rarely there at all, and the estate was maintained by hired help.

As a child, Hadt was never interested in medicine. He was, however, always looking out for others.  While his mother was almost completely absent in his childhood, and his father only slightly less so, Hadt looked up to his older brother Cholder for guidance and support. Likewise, his younger sister Alyst relied on him, and in this relationship his desire to assist others was born.

EDUCATION:
Eventually this vague notion was narrowed down to the field of medicine. With warp speed a commonplace addition to the universe, Trill was not alone. Alien species always held an extreme fascination for Hadt, and he spent many days and nights reading articles about the Humans, the Vulcans, the Andorians, the Klingons, and others.

When he graduated from the Spelder Institute in 2366 with a focus in pre-medicine, Hadt was "encouraged" by his father to apply to Starfleet Academy.  A brilliant young man, the application examination was not difficult. However, while intellectually the Academy was challenging and
invigorating, socially Hadt became withdrawn and isolational.

While he had read so many hundreds of kiloquads of data regarding alien species, he did not know how to relate to them.  He had spent much time on Earth as a child, visiting his father in Paris or his mother in Spain or on the Atlantic ocean.  Humans were easy to get along with.  Other species, however, were more difficult.

Eventually, Hadt turned to humor to broaden his social horizons.  He fell into a new role as a sarcastic comic; known for his quick wit and laid-back, friendly demeanor.

After two years at the Academy, Hadt finally realized his potential by applying to and being accepted at Starfleet Medical in 2368.  There he truly began to learn about aliens, specializing in xenobiology with a focus in genetics.  That same year he applied to the prestigious Symbiont Initiate Program and began the rigorous training involved.  This decision was backed by his parents; his mother subjected him to intense pressure, and his father, through political contacts back on the homeworld, exerted influence on his behalf.

When Hadt was accepted into the program, he ascribed it to sheer luck.  He was unaware of the unscrupulous means through which it was arranged.

In 2372, during his fourth year at Starfleet Medical, tragedy struck the Varel family. Aker, former an arbiter, had branched into interstellar diplomacy, and was in attendance at a diplomatic conference held at Antwerp on Earth. The conference was a historic meeting between Romulan and Federation delegates, and may have been a precursor to the dissolution of hostilities between the two governments.

On the second day of the conference, there was an explosion. Initially, the Romulans and Federation laid blame upon each other, and relations were severely damaged. Later analysis indicated something far more sinister, though, revealing the fact that a changeling had infiltrated Earth - the homeworld of the Federation - and been responsible for the blast, which killed 26, including Hadt's father.

STARFLEET SERVICE:
Hadt graduated Starfleet Medical in 2373 with high honors in his field of comparative xenobiology, and was commissioned at the rank of Lieutenant, junior grade.  He was assigned to the USS Washington Carver, an Olympic-class hospital ship providing medical relief to Federation starships along the Cardassian border.  During this time, he was introduced to the harsh realties of war, and treated thousands of patients.  A year later, his training cruise was completed.

At this time, he recieved the news that all Initiates hope for: a symbiont had become available.  Trais Ethain, who gained his symbiont through less than moral means, was murdered on Rigel VII only four weeks after being joined.  Ethain survived and required a new host.  While the Dominion war was cause for concern, and several symbionts had been lost when their Starfleet hosts were killed in combat, Hadt was selected by the Commission and travelled back to Trill for the Joining.

With his training cruise over, he was a fully-commissioned officer in Starfleeet.  In 2374, he was transferred to the Intrepid-class USS Bellerephon, under the command of Admiral Ross. This transfer included a promotion to full Lieutenant, and a position as a full medical staff member.

As Admiral Ross' flagship, the Bellerephon was involved in many diplomatic ventures, including a mission across the neutral zone to Romulus. Interacting with Romulans face-to-face; exchanging ideas and information with doctors and scientists there was the highlight of Hadt Ethain's Starfleet career to that point.

Alternately, the Bellerephon was also involved in many prominent military engagements, including the final battle of the Dominion War over Cardassia, where she was heavily damaged with many casualties.

In 2375, Admiral Ross was assigned a new flagship; the Prometheus-class USS Cerebrus - the second of its line after the prototype.  Much of the Bellerephon crew transferred to the Cerebrus, but Hadt, like many other war veterans, took some vacation time to reassess his future career.  He was tired of war and fighting; tired of watching people die under his care. Eventually, he was contacted by his former department head, a personal friend, and convinced to transfer to the Cerebrus.

Life aboard the Cerebrus was relatively quiet. The Alpha and Beta quadrants were calm, a starkly different period from the months before at the apex of the great conflict. The only extreme highlight was in early 2377 when a Borg sphere attacked Earth. The Cerebrus along with 20-some other starships
was pulled to defend Sector 001, and the sphere was destroyed.  It then became apparent that the sphere was not actually sent to attack Earth, but rather was pursuing the ill-fated USS Voyager.  Voyager returned to the Alpha Quadrant during this event, the cause of much celebration at Starfleet
Headquarters.

In 2377, a few months after the Voyager's return to Earth, Hadt was transferred to the USS Terra Nova, where he served as the ship's Chief Medical Officer. In early 2378, he was deemed missing in action during an away team mission aboard the Terra Nova.

PERSONALITY PROFILE
Hadt is a friendly and engaging person. However, behind the charming smile of a once-innocent young man now hides a hint of darkness, something he neither understands nor wishes to explore.

There's something about Hadt which deflects excessive attention; this results in him appearing completely mundane and normal, even in extremely unusual situations.

Hadt is a loyal person; always concerned for others' welfare.  He is generally helpful, but over the years has begun to develop tendencies of secrecy and subtle deviousness.  These tendencies have only been escalated by his joining with the Ethain symbiont. The brutal murder of Trais Ethain dealt the symbiont a shock that it was not able to completely recover from. Much of this trauma was carried over to Hadt, and subtle repercussions have begun to creep into Hadt's psyche.

Hadt's main strength is adaptability. When confonted with an obstacle, he automatically begins to find ways to counteract the block, and rarely assumes that the situation is hopeless. He is intelligent, resourceful, and not easily daunted. He counters conflict with a comical, often sarcastic approach, hiding any true concern or doubt.

Hadt's main weakness is a lack of self-control. He is innately curious - overly so. When confronted with a mystery or enigma, he often cannot resist investigating.

PHYSICAL PROFILE
Hadt stands slightly shorter than the average male at 5 feet, 10 inches.  He has broad shoulders but a thin, compact frame.  His hair is jet black, and he wears is shaved neatly and short.  His eyes are completely black, a genetic rarety among his people.

SPECIAL NOTES
Hadt, like all Trill, is extremely allergic to even the tamest of insect bites and derivitives made from insect venom.

Hadt is deficient in piloting; he failed the general shuttle and runabout piloting certification exam four consecutive times, and upon completion only achieved a rank of 1C. He has since taken the test and passed. He hates flying of any sort, and avoids atmospheric shuttle flights; preferring transporters whenever possible.

Hadt is afraid of heights, deep water, and deathly afraid of spiders and other insects, especially alien varieties.  The fear of heights contributes to his horrible piloting skills, the fear of deep water was inherited from Ethain's first host Oaker, who nearly drowned, and the fear of spiders came from a multitude of horror stories and urban legends told to as a child.
