CHILDHOOD:
Anneka was born aboard the New Gibraltar Orbital Research Station into a caring family of academics. Her mother, a Professor of Warp Field Theory at Cambridge, moved to the Research Station to be with her husband upon realising she had fallen pregnant during their last fleeting encounter (like many xenobiologists, Gordon spent half his life hopping from system to system, only seeing his wife when their paths should cross by chance, or during his shoreleave). Being something of a traditionalist, Anna-Michelle put her career on hold to raise her daughter, intending to return once Anneka was deemed 'old enough' to do without her.

The young Anneka, spending almost all of her waking time in the presence of a respect lecturer and teacher - who found educating her own progeny far more interesting than educating other people's - could hardly be expected to turn out 'normal'. She was reading by two, and doing mental arithmetic by three. Something of a prodigy, starting school two years early, she never developed the precocious neuroses that usually went hand-in-hand with such abilities, becoming rather more of a people-person in her youth, helping her friends with her mental strengths, rather than simply 'showing off' or striving to increase the gap between she and they.

To give Anneka something to do that was not academic - some sort of release - her mother secured her a 'cello and weekly lessons. The young Anneka took to the instrument like a duck to water, finding it to be a useful outlet for all her various emotions - both frustrations and joys. Her mother also tutored her in the Andorian language, Andor being the closest major colony to the Station.

Anna-Michelle's death hit Anneka very hard, unsurprisingly, but it his Gordon harder. He went from being an outgoing, gentle man to being cold and withdrawn. At many points during her youth, Anneka felt that he somehow blamed her for her mother's death. This feeling was reinforced when, having uprooted her from the Colony she knew as home, he then abandoned her with her grandparents the instant he received an offer to return to off-world research.

Anneka learned to fend for herself. Her grandparents had no lack of enthusiasm when it came to her care, but they were old and needed caring for themselves. Never one to shy from her responsibilities, Anneka balanced their needs with those of her education, still managing to graduate on-schedule, and at the top of her class. Her grandparents were elated, her graduation meaning as much to them as her father's had done - they organised holidays to Vulcan and Alpha Centauri to celebrate. Her father sent her a card.

EDUCATION:
Anneka's nickname - Annie - was inherited during her days at University. Even now, she views these times as probably the most consistently happy of her life. She had been born and raised among academics - and now she was living among them and working with them full time. Her love of Science and Engineering was stronger than it had ever been, and the opportunity to specialise her studies even further was not to be missed.

It was during her 'Undergrad Years' that she came to realise her fascination for weapons systems and technology. Knowing as much dimestore psychology as one could learn from a childhood reading the works of Charles M. Schultz, she reasoned this somewhat morbid fascination with weaponry and death was a side-effect of her mother's death, combined with emotional starvation in terms of fatherly affection. The real reason was, simply, that her interests revolved around energetics, and that the most active field of research in that area was systems and weapons design for Starships.

Her first Ph.D. was a stopgap, in all honesty. She did not know what she wanted to do, or where she wanted to go, after she finished University. So, instead, she chose a subject that piqued her interest and spent two and a half years researching it, and penning an 80,000 word thesis on the subject. Ironically, her thesis would later form the basis for phased polaron beam-weapons developments during the Dominion War.

Her second thesis subject, however, was much closer to her heart. Following the Borg assault on Wolf 359, there was a renewed vigour in terms of new weapons research. Anneka had long believed than phase-pulse bursts made a more effective weapon in terms of structural shock and impulse that continued beam emission, and now there was enough interest within her department to guarantee her the funding and resources to pursue the theory. Another 80,000-word document later, she obtained her second, and most valued, doctorate. Again, her paper would help the higher-ups of Starfleet R&D: it was one of dozens that ship architects later called upon during the development of the Defiant-class's experimental weapons systems.

It was during her final year at University that she developed an interest in keeping herself in some sort of trim physical shape. She had been blessed with an overactive metabolism, and had never needed to worry about being 'fat' as such, but she had never felt the need to push herself in an athletic sense. She took up Tai Chi and gymnastics in that year, and still to this day practises the latter, the former giving way to other, more 'offensive' martial arts she was taught at Academy.

Her decision to join Starfleet - and not just 'Fleet, but the Marine Corps - caused some consternation for her grandparents, who had expected her to take a safer, more 'academic' career. But they respected her decision. Her father was not so forgiving. Having taken practically no interest in her life after the death of his wife, he contacted her at hearing this news to shout her down; to point out the embarrassment she was causing to their family by joining a 'bunch of brutes and thugs'. He said she was wasting her mind, and her mother's genetic inheritance. She told him he was wasting her time, and cut off the connection. The two have not spoken since.

STARFLEET SERVICE:
An officer and an academic, Price found she was treated with kid gloves for the early part of her service career - her Company Commander aboard the Catalonia kept her behind a desk, filling out forms and handling admin work. Somehow, in his view, having a double-doc and an IQ of 165 made one incapable of actual combat service. Her career might have died right there - condemned to a life as a filing clerk - if she hadn't been transferred to the Excalibur under the direct command of a new Company Commander: one Captain Martyn Mayfair.

Mayfair still kept her behind a desk, much of the time, but unlike her previous Commander he did so out of regard for what she *could* do, rather than a misconceived notion of what she *couldn't*. She handled his strategic analyses and ordinance deployment. She served as his right hand throughout the majority of his career - a close friend, and a closer ally. During this period, she was diagnosed with a minor heart condition - she was advised to lessen her workload and move onto a healthier eating plan; she managed the eating plan...

When Mayfair received his Major's commission, Price found herself elevated to the heady heights of Company Commander herself. For the first time in her career, she saw steady and consistant action in the field, proving herself time and again as a fine Commander, as well as a Thinker. Her CO often referred to her as the Backbone of the Battalion. So much so that when he was given Battalion Command, he made her de facto Commander of the Battalion Alpha-Company, handling strategic despatches and the like. She also found herself spending more and more time in the shipboard laboratories, continuing her weapons research.

The last days of her 'active' service were spent helping with the Betazoid relief efforts. What she saw there sobered her extremely. She spent an increasing amount of time working with the University of Betazed and BetaRAc, coordinating their efforts with those of 'Fleet to meet the needs of the people. While working with BetaRAc, she met a Daughter of the Third House, one Jelandra Gear, who diagnosed her heart condition as being something significantly more dangerous than a 'murmur'. Gear advised Price to let her perform exploratory scans, to see if the condition was operable. Convinced that it was not curable, Price declined the offer, instead returning to a strict regimen of healthy eating and light exercise.

The war over, and her heart condition noted by her superiors, she was reassigned to R&D at BetaRAc to work on the updating of Betazed's antiquated planetary defences. At some point during this project, information becomes sketchy. All that is known is that a General's son was working as her assistant, and died in a laboratory accident. She resigned her commission shortly afterwards.

POST-STARFLEET:
Anneka secured passage on a transport out of the Betazed sector, ending up working as an engineer aboard an independant trader vessel in exchange for a small share in profits, room and board. A particularly lengthy, and thoroughly unprofitable, contract took them to the colony of New Urbaine. Their ship damaged almost beyond spaceworthiness, the entire crew took out personal loans from a seemingly reasonable loan shark, using their ship (the 'John Carter of Mars') as collatoral, to pay for a hull refit.

Deciding to stay and find work in the local sector, the JCoM began running cargo out of New Urbaine. Having secured a reasonably profitable contract, she left to Gideon IV, only to be attacked and crippled - left for dead - by an enemy that their sensors didn't recognise.

The only survivor, Anneka survived on ration bars and minimal, localised life-support, until the USS Terra Nova happened upon the floating space-hulk. Desperately, she begs to be kept aboard the ship, volunteering to do any menial tasks to do so - having realised, reading through their loan contract in an effort to keep her sanity in the lonely vastness of space, that the instant she sets foot off the Terra Nova her body becomes the personal property of the loan shark; to sell into slavery, if he so desires - or worse.

PERSONALITY PROFILE
One would have to walk a long way to find a person more helpful or understanding than Annie Price. She holds herself to standards that she simply doesn't expect of other people in terms of kindness and simple good-naturedness. Her friends find her to be a loyal and trustworthy companion in the face of any adversity - she does not back down, and she does not give up: if life has taught her anything, it is that it is her job to fight for both her rights and those of unfortunate masses. In a way, this is egotistical - she believes that, having been born with a gifted mind, it is her duty to protect those she views as being born 'less gifted' (read: 'normal').

Her loyalty to the Federation, despite the fact it has abandoned her, is unwavering and absolute - almost religious in its dedication. A self-discovered patriot, she has no qualms about taking any measures to aid in the protection of her species and its allies.

Her service in the SFMC was exemplary, and she takes a great deal of personal pride in this, despite being externally very humble and unassuming of her own achievements. These contradictory parts of her psyche make her an interesting person to be around - she finds that her presence often causes people to try and be nicer and better than they are, simply because they don't want to disappoint her.

The is a charismatic and convincing leader, but has always felt happier to serve - either superiors, or just lifekind in general. In academia, her superiors were her Professors and Supervisors; in 'Fleet, her superiors were her immediate Commanders; this reinforces the idea that she does not wish to push herself into any sort of limelight, a reflection of her modesty.

She is not a violent person unless a situation demands it. When she resorts to violence, she is ruthless and lethal, believing that dealing with the situation quickly and clinically limits the suffering of both parties - or at least increases its brevity. As her heart condition has worsened, she has found herself more withdrawn 'after-hours', but she refuses to let it stop her helping those who need it.

Price is pseudo-agnostic. She believes fervently in the existance of a higher being - exactly which one of the various options is 'correct' she is still debating.

PHYSICAL PROFILE
Anneka is 5' tall, and of medium, toned build. Her skin is very pale for a Human; her eyes are green and her medium-length hair is naturally strawberry-blonde. She might be described as pretty, but a better description would be hauntingly elegant - almost ghostly.

When her heart gives her pain, she is not above clutching at her sternum and wincing. On duty, she wears an applicable uniform; off duty, she wears either dungarees and t-shirt (in private) or white and cream gowns (in public).

SPECIAL NOTES
Most of Anneka's special personal possessions were destroyed when her quarters decompressed during the firefight. She managed to rescue her degree and doctoral certificates with a daring EVA during her period 'alone', along with several of her books that were in sealed storage units - including a leather-bound copy of the Diaries of Admiral, Horatio the Lord Nelson, and hardback copies of the Complete Works of Patrick O'Brian. Her 'cello had been left on the 'recreation deck' the previous evening, and so was spared a horrible, splintering fate. The rest of her books, including a complete academic guide to the Napoleonic Wars, and to the War of 1812, were sucked out into the vastness of space, along with most of her clothing.

In her spare time, she continues to play her 'cello, practices 'Zen and the Art of Baking', and occasionally wastes time on a holodeck, watching recreations of great naval battles like The Armada, and the Nile.

Her favourite style of music is Baroque - or, as she calls it, "When the 'Cello Ruled to Earth". Her favourite literature is the poetry of Alfred Lord Tennyson, followed closedly by the works of Henry Fielding, C. S. Forester and Patrick O'Brian.

Her motto, if such exists, is: "Tho' much is taken, much abides."k.
